Do you remember all that work you did to make sure you have authorship set up on all of your websites and blogs? Google and thus all of the SEO’s out there said you HAVE to get authorship setup so Google can link all of your stuff together and get you higher rankings! rel=author, they shouted!
Well … never mind. Google authorship is now dead.
Googler John Mueller, who has been involved with the authorship markup from the beginning, announced Thursday evening that they have made the “difficult decision to stop showing authorship in search results.” The information provided from authorship wasn’t as useful to Google users as they had hoped.
Most of us added the authorship markup to our sites and articles to improve our organic ranking in Google. What happens to those of us that did what Google asked and implemented the markup? Will we see a decline in our rankings now? The good news is Mueller says that in their tests,
removing authorship generally does not seem to reduce traffic to sites. Nor does it increase clicks on ads.
